What The Lion Hunters Is About
The documentary is about lion hunting with bow and arrow in West Africa. The filming was done along the border of Niger and Mali and spread over years. Jean Rouch followed the Gao hunters for a long time. The film shows every stage of the hunt: making the bow and the arrows, preparing the poison, tracking the animal. The rites that follow the hunt are in the film as well. This hunting is a craft passed from father to son, and the right to kill a lion belongs to them alone. The account does not separate technique from belief; the two run into each other. The film won the Golden Lion at Venice in 1965. Jean Rouch’s eighty eight minute French documentary was completed in 1966.
