What Little by Little Is About
An African man goes to Paris to learn how tall buildings are put up. But before long the oddities of French life interest him more than the buildings, and he finds himself inside a kind of fieldwork: he studies how people greet one another, what they eat and how they treat each other. In this way the film turns the usual direction of looking around; the side under study this time is Europe. The account stands between fiction and documentary, and the players mostly perform people close to themselves. The humour of the film comes out of this reversed look; the things found strange are in fact perfectly ordinary habits. Damoure Zika appears in Jean Rouch’s ninety six minute French film, completed in 1970.
