Carlina Torta What The Icicle Thief Is About
The director Maurizio Nichetti is invited onto television to introduce a screening of his own neorealist film. He is appalled to find his black and white story of poverty broken up every few minutes by garish colour advertising, and more appalled when a power cut in the studio lets the film and the commercials bleed into each other. A model from an ad falls into the film, a woman from the film surfaces in consumer paradise, and Nichetti has to climb into his own picture to fix it. The Italian title is a pun on Bicycle Thieves: soap thieves. Nichetti is looking at classic Italian cinema and at the television that dismembered it in the same gesture. It starts as a joke and ends up as a still-accurate account of how advertising eats a narrative.
