What The Illusionist Is About
A poor miller’s family has two sons; one is committed to a psychiatric hospital and the other goes looking for him there. The brother left outside wants to get on stage and become a magician, and the film is built around him looking back at that childhood. Not one intelligible word is spoken in Jos Stelling’s film, yet it is full of sound: this is not a silent film but a film without dialogue, where everything is carried by image and body. Freek de Jonge both stars in it and is its source, since the work grew out of his own stage show from 1980. It won the Golden Calf for best film in 1984.
