Bohuš lives in the country, drinks and does not do much. The regime has changed and old property is being returned to its owners. A lawyer finds him: land and buildings that belonged to his grandfather are now his. Overnight he is rich. He does not know what to do. He buys a car, stands rounds, hands money to everyone around him, and everyone gathers about him. His wife, his friends and people who never spoke to him queue up. Věra Chytilová directs. Bolek Polívka plays Bohuš and co wrote the screenplay. It was made in Czechoslovakia immediately after the change of regime and takes the new situation directly as its subject: restitution of property, sudden wealth and the dissolution that caused in rural society. Chytilová is among the best known directors of the Czech new wave; this is from her late period and the tone is hard satire. The narrative defends nobody. Bohuš is stupid, the people around him are out for what they can get, and the new order makes nobody better. The language is coarse and the title announces it; swearing runs through the narrative and the character's way of speaking is the film's comedy. It was a large commercial success in the Czech lands and among the most watched films of the period. Who it is for: viewers who like Czech cinema and social satire. Who it is not for: the humour is coarse, the characters are deliberately repellent, and the target of the satire is lost without the context of the period.
