What Panelstory or Birth of a Community Is About
On the edge of Prague a new housing estate is still going up. An old man wanders about the site trying to find the block he is meant to move into with his daughter’s family. The signposting is poor, the roads are half finished and nobody knows exactly where anything is. The grandfather, up from the countryside, likes to talk, misses nothing and wants to lend everyone a hand. Around that search the film shows how a whole neighbourhood gets made. At every door the man stops at, another life turns up. A newly built place that has not yet become a neighbourhood is the film’s real subject. Věra Chytilová’s ninety six minute Czechoslovak film was completed in 1981.
