A Hoof Here, a Hoof There

The lives of three friends run on drink, pranks and relationships nobody commits to. Pepe is an auditor, Dědek a vet, František a restaurant manager. All three are comfortably off and have built an easy arrangement with girlfriends much like themselves. That arrangement breaks when Pepe collapses one day and ends up in hospital. From that point the film shows the same people in an entirely different light. The account does not lecture and does not set the illness up as a punishment. Věra Chytilová draws the portrait of a whole generation with a sharp humour. Tomáš Hanák, Milan Šteindler and David Vávra appear in her hundred and twenty nine minute Czechoslovak film, completed in 1989.
