What The Italian Straw Hat Is About
On the morning of Fadinard's wedding his horse eats a hat left on a roadside bush. The hat belongs to a married woman hiding behind that bush with her lover, Lieutenant Tavernier, and going home without it would ruin her. Tavernier demands that Fadinard find an identical replacement or he will wreck the newlyweds' home. The groom hunting for a hat while trying to keep to his own wedding schedule produces an escalating disaster. Rene Clair moved Eugene Labiche's 1851 vaudeville forward to the 1890s, which turned the film into a joke about the play and about the audience that loved it.
