What The Land of the Enlightened Is About
Kuchi children living in the minefields around Bagram airfield in Afghanistan dig anti personnel mines out of the ground to sell the explosives. The explosives go to child workers in a lapis lazuli mine, and the road of the blue stones runs on to Tajikistan and China through an area held by child soldiers. When the children are not carrying on their own small wars they take refuge in their imaginings, while the American soldiers plan their withdrawal. The film mixes documentary and staged material on purpose; some of what we see has been set up. Pieter-Jan De Pue’s eighty three minute documentary was completed in 2016.
