What The Last Four Days Is About
April 1945. The fascist regime in Italy has collapsed and Mussolini is trying to get out. With him is Claretta Petacci, and the two of them head north towards the Swiss border with partisans on their trail. The film takes the last four days and tells them through the small, steadily more desperate details of a flight: who promised what to whom, who sold whom, who is waiting where. Carlo Lizzani directs, with Rod Steiger as Mussolini and Lisa Gastoni as Claretta, and Franco Nero and Henry Fonda in the cast. The film reaches for neither heroism nor hatred, and follows the events step by step at a cold distance.
