What The Last Shaman Is About
James is in his early twenties, clinically depressed, and has run out of treatments that work. He gives himself a year: if he finds no way out within it, he intends to end his life. He goes to the Amazon and moves between shamans who conduct ayahuasca ceremonies. Raz Degan's 2017 documentary follows one person's search and offers no treatment recommendation and no medical conclusion. The effect of ayahuasca on depression is still a research question, and unregulated ceremonies carry serious risks; the film shows an environment holding both hope and exploitation. A patient and uncomfortable record of where desperation takes a person.
