What The Last Voyage Is About
The S.S. Claridon is a thirty-eight-year-old liner on one of her last crossings. There is an explosion in the boiler room. The captain is slow to order the ship abandoned, and the crew races the clock to hold the bulkhead between the flooded boiler room and the engine room. Among the passengers, Cliff Henderson's wife Laurie is pinned under a steel beam in their cabin. He works to get her out, with one crewman named Hank to help him. The ship keeps listing further. Andrew L. Stone directs; ninety-one minutes. Robert Stack plays Cliff, Dorothy Malone plays Laurie and Woody Strode plays Hank. The scenes were not shot with models but on a real ship: the French liner Île de France, already sold for scrap, was hired and genuinely torn apart over the course of the filming.
