What The Password Is Courage Is About
Sergeant Major Charles Coward is captured during the Second World War and starts planning his escape the moment he is inside the camp. Pretending to be a wounded German soldier, he gets as far as the medical tent, and the Germans, not realising, award him the Iron Cross. He is eventually found out and does not stop. Andrew L. Stone adapted John Castle's 1954 book and plays the whole thing as comedy. Coward was a real person, and this is not what he is chiefly known for: he described getting himself into Auschwitz to help Jewish prisoners, testified at Nuremberg, and was named among the Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem in 1963. The numbers he gave for how many he saved have been disputed since the sixties. The film leaves that part almost entirely out.
