The Legend of Rita

Rita Vogt belongs to an armed group in West Germany. After an action goes wrong she has to get out of the country, and help arrives from a direction nobody expected: the East German security service gives her somewhere to hide and a new identity. Rita becomes an ordinary woman working in a factory, living every day with the fear of being recognised. Volker Schlöndorff wrote the screenplay with Wolfgang Kohlhaase. What it describes actually happened: in the 1980s East Germany built new lives for a number of West German militants, and when the two states merged those people were exposed. The film neither glorifies nor condemns. Bibiana Beglau and Nadja Uhl shared the Silver Bear for best actress at Berlin in 2000.
