What The Lighthouse Keepers Is About
In a lighthouse off the coast of Brittany a young man goes slowly mad after a rabid dog bites him, and his father can only watch. The sea is too rough for anyone to reach them or for them to leave, so both are prisoners of the tower. On shore a young bride waits, knowing nothing about any of it. Jean Grémillon’s silent film was adapted from a play by Pierre Antier and P. Cloquemin first staged in 1905, scripted by Jacques Feyder and photographed by Georges Périnal. It was thought lost for decades until a print turned up in Denmark in 1954. Marcel Carné described Périnal’s images at the time as grey without being flat and imprecise without being obscure.
