What The Strange Monsieur Victor Is About
Victor is a shopkeeper everyone in Toulon respects, devoted to his wife and courteous to his neighbours. Behind that front he is the best known fence in town, doing business with hardened criminals. When one of his partners threatens to expose him he panics and kills the man, and the murder falls on a local shoemaker, who is sent down for ten years of hard labour. Seven years later the shoemaker escapes and comes back to Toulon, and the first man to recognise him is Victor. Jean Gremillon made this French German co-production with Raimu, and it stands among the harder examples of poetic realism.
