What The Strange Madame X Is About
Irène is the wife of a wealthy publisher. Her husband’s name is Jacques Voisin-Larive. He treats her like a handsome piece of furniture. She leads an unhappy life at home. One day she meets Étienne. Étienne is a young cabinetmaker. The two of them fall in love. Irène does not tell him her situation. She presents herself as a maid working in that house. She spends a weekend with her lover. On her return she learns that she is pregnant. The balance she had built collapses at once. She tells her husband about the affair and asks for a divorce. Jacques, though, has no intention of giving her her freedom. Michèle Morgan and Henri Vidal appear in the eighty five minute film, a French production Jean Grémillon finished in 1951.
