What The Love of a Woman Is About
Marie, a young doctor, arrives on the island of Ouessant off the coast of Brittany. At first the islanders do not trust her; nobody believes a woman can do this work, but patient by patient Marie earns her place. Then she falls in love with an Italian engineer who has come to the island, and he expects her to give up her work and leave with him. So she is made to choose between the thing she has wanted all her life and the man she loves; the film neither resolves the dilemma nor makes it easy. Micheline Presle and Massimo Girotti appear in Jean Grémillon’s hundred and four minute French film; it was completed in 1953.
