What The Man Who Could Work Miracles Is About

George Fotheringay is an ordinary man working in a shop in the provinces. One evening in the pub, while explaining that miracles cannot happen, he tells a lamp to turn upside down; the lamp turns. From that moment everything he says comes true. He tries small things first, then sets about improving people. A man with unlimited power does not know what he can fix. Lothar Mendes directed the film from H. G. Wells's own story; Wells wrote the screenplay as well. Roland Young takes the lead, with Ralph Richardson and Ernest Thesiger in the cast. Some of the most ambitious special effects of the period are in this film, made under Alexander Korda's production. Despite the comic tone the film's question is serious: what would happen if the power were in well-meaning hands.
