What The Mysterious X Is About
The naval officer van Hauen is about to leave for the war, and shortly before he goes he discovers by chance that his wife has a secret involvement with Count Spinelli. What the family does not know is that Spinelli is working to an entirely different plan. Benjamin Christensen's first film, made in 1914, became known for using light as a means of narration at the earliest stage of silent cinema: darkness, shadow and what is left outside the frame are not decor here but the tension itself. Christensen also plays the lead. This early piece of Danish cinema announces the visual nerve of Haxan, which he would make eight years later.
