What The Paris Opera Is About
The documentary goes behind the scenes at the Paris Opera and shows from the inside how the institution is run. The account begins in the summer of 2015, with the first season of Stéphane Lissner at its head, and the camera moves through the corridors of both the Bastille building and the historic Palais Garnier. Rehearsal rooms, union negotiations, budget meetings and the moments before going on stage all sit in the same flow, which is how the artistic and the administrative work of an opera house become visible as one thing. Jean-Stéphane Bron’s hundred and ten minute French Swiss co-production was named best documentary at the Swiss Film Prize in 2018 and drew more than two hundred thousand admissions.
