What The Petrified Forest Is About
At the centre of the account are a young medical student’s relations with two women. One is a friend from childhood, and what is between them is heading somewhere dangerous. The other is his mother, who is trying to repair the break between them. The film ties these two lines together and shows the young man caught between them. The past deciding the present is the real subject. It is one of the darker toned works of Japanese cinema in 1973. The hundred and eighteen minutes are given to those two relations. Kenichi Hagiwara and Shima Iwashita appear in Masahiro Shinoda’s Japanese film, completed in 1973.
