What The Princess of Montpensier Is About
In sixteenth-century France, with the wars of religion under way, Marie de Mézières is married not to the man she loves but to the Prince de Montpensier, chosen by her family. Her husband leaves for the war and leaves a man in the house to educate her: Chabannes, a former soldier. Four men circle Marie and none of them sees her as a person in her own right. Bertrand Tavernier adapted Madame de La Fayette's short novel. The period scenes are staged not for historical accuracy but to show how narrow the woman's room for movement is, and the battles are muddy and brief. Mélanie Thierry leads, with Lambert Wilson as Chabannes. The film promises romance and ends in solitude. Who it is for: viewers who like French period drama and literary adaptation. Who it is not for: anyone expecting an eventful historical film.
