Katie Stam L Lorraine Barrett J June Downs What The Queen of Versailles Is About
David Siegel, who made a fortune in timeshares, and his wife Jackie begin building the largest house in America in Florida, a ninety-thousand-square-foot residence modelled on Versailles. Then the crash of 2008 arrives and the credit arrangement the company rests on collapses. Lauren Greenfield started the documentary as a portrait of wealth and ended with a story of ruin. The camera stays inside the family: the staff let go, the house that cannot be sold, children who do not understand the situation, and Jackie unable to give up shopping. Its best quality is that it does not mock. David Siegel sued the film and lost. It won the directing prize at Sundance. Who it is for: viewers who like documentary about class and money. Who it is not for: anyone looking for sympathetic characters.
