Franco Scaldati What The Return of Cagliostro Is About
Franco Maresco's film is set in Sicily at the end of the 1940s. Two sculptor brothers, tired of selling madonnas to churches, set up their own production company with the help of a local bishop. They turn out one cheap flop after another, cast with people from the area who have nothing to do with acting. Deep in debt, the big chance arrives: a local nobleman obsessed with magic decides to put his whole fortune into a film about Cagliostro. A famous American actor is hired and shooting begins. The film proceeds in the form of a mock documentary and makes fun of the economics of provincial Italian cinema. Robert Englund plays himself.
