The first feature by Ciprì and Maresco, set in a half ruined and nearly emptied Palermo. Three middle aged brothers living in a poor house are pressed by the local mafia into hiding a man: an old man of uncertain identity known as the Uncle from Brooklyn. The pair were known until then for Cinico TV on Rai 3, and they shot this with non professional performers on a very small budget. It is black and white, built from long takes and images that often do not connect to each other, and it is a black comedy. Sicily here is neither picturesque nor epic; it is decayed and strange. Selected for Venice, it was withdrawn by the directors in protest at the festival's choices.
