What Toto Who Lived Twice Is About
Three stories, all set on the outskirts of Palermo. In the first, Paletta, taken by the district for its idiot, cannot pay a woman and so steals a locket from the shrine of the local mafia boss. The second tells of the betrayal of Pitrinu, now dead, by his lover Fefe. In the third a good-for-nothing called Lazarus is killed by the mob boss Totò and raised from the dead by a local messiah also called Totò. Daniele Ciprì and Franco Maresco directed it together, in black and white and with a cast that is almost entirely male. It was initially blocked from release in Italy for blasphemy; the case ended in acquittal in 2001. It had already screened in Berlin.
