What Mafia Is Not What It Used to Be Is About
Palermo, 2017. Twenty-five years have passed since the killings of the anti-mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, and the city is full of commemorations. The photographer Letizia Battaglia, who documented those years, regards the ceremonies with suspicion: to her mind the same political class both forgot and then took ownership of the remembering. Meanwhile the impresario Ciccio Mira sets about staging a concert in honour of Falcone and Borsellino. Franco Maresco's documentary won the Special Jury Prize at Venice and is treated as a sequel to his Belluscone. Maresco lets nobody off, and shows that commemoration itself can turn into a show.
