What The Rise of the Synths Is About
Iván Castell's documentary is about the musical current called synthwave. It feeds on the film scores, the video games and the synthesiser sounds of the 1980s, though most of the people making it never lived through those years. That is the film's real subject: longing for a past that never existed, and how that longing turned into a shared memory over the internet. Composers, label owners and listeners speak in it, and the narrator is John Carpenter, whose own scores are among the current's main sources. Kavinsky, Robert Parker and Waveshaper appear as well. It is less a film about music than about how nostalgia gets manufactured.
