What The Seventh Juror Is About
A respectable pharmacist in a provincial town kills a young woman sunbathing by a lake, in a moment he cannot afterwards explain to himself. He runs from it, and the next morning he opens his shop as though nothing happened. The police arrest the woman's boyfriend. When the trial comes, the town summons its leading citizens to the jury, and the killer takes his seat among them. Georges Lautner is remembered for comedies, but what he builds here is unrelieved crime drama. The tension is never about who did it, only about how long the man can carry it. Bernard Blier's quiet, clenched performance holds the whole thing up.
