What The Great Spy Chase Is About
When an arms dealer dies, his widow is left in the middle of every agent chasing her husband's patent files: French, Soviet, American, German and Swiss all move into her house at once and all politely try to kill each other. Georges Lautner turns Cold War espionage entirely into a joke and deliberately exaggerates every cliché, from poisoned soup to an exploding telephone. Michel Audiard's dialogue is the strength, with the agents speaking with extreme courtesy even while murdering one another. Lino Ventura leads and carries the comedy without ever smiling. It is now a cult object in France and its lines entered everyday speech. The mass reckoning at the end is among the most crowded in the genre. Who it is for: viewers who like sixties French spy parody and Audiard's humour. Who it is not for: anyone wanting genuine espionage tension, since everything here resolves into a joke.
