Leonid Pirogov What The Snow Maiden Is About
The Snow Maiden, daughter of Spring and Frost, longs for the company of mortal people and grows fond of a shepherd named Lel. Her heart, though, cannot know love, and when her mother finally gives her that capacity it warms, and the moment it warms she begins to melt. Ivan Ivanov-Vano’s sixty seven minute Soyuzmultfilm production was adapted from the Slavic pagan play Aleksandr Ostrovsky wrote in 1873, with music arranged for the screen from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s 1882 opera. The animation tells the tale without inflating it or drawing a moral, and leaves the story of a girl who ends where winter ends exactly as it stands. Some sources credit the direction to Ivanov-Vano together with Aleksandra Snezhko-Blotskaya.
