What The Twelve Months Is About
A poor girl is sent into the forest in the depth of winter by her stepmother: the queen wants snowdrops, and the girl cannot come back without them. Wandering in the snow she comes across twelve men sitting round a fire, and they turn out to be the twelve months. They take pity on her and call up spring for a few minutes. She gathers the snowdrops, and nothing gets easier once she is back at the palace. Ivan Ivanov-Vano's 1956 Soviet animation is adapted from Samuil Marshak's play of the same name. It is hand-drawn and runs fifty-five minutes, using the classic structure of kindness set against greed, and drawing winter as a character rather than a backdrop.
