What The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry Is About
Harry Quincey is a middle-aged man in a small New England town who designs patterns at the textile mill. He lives with his two sisters, and Lettie in particular has a complete hold over him. When Harry falls for a woman who has come from the city, Lettie sets to work on ending it by whatever means are available to her. Robert Siodmak's film was mauled by the censors: the dark ending of the source play was replaced by the studio and a dream explanation was tacked on. Siodmak later wrote that the idea had been his own, while his biographer Joseph Greco says he refused to shoot it and that the final scene was directed by Roy William Neill. Producer Joan Harrison never worked with the studio again.
