What The Tasters Is About
Autumn 1943, a village in East Prussia. Rosa, twenty six, has come from Berlin to stay with her husband’s parents while he fights on the Russian front, and one day the SS collect her and take her somewhere nobody has explained, where a plate is set down in front of her. The job is to test with her own body whether the food going to Hitler has been poisoned. Adapted from Rosella Postorino’s novel, the film locates its suspense not at the front but in the half hour of waiting after every meal, and in what these women become to one another at that table.
