What The Trail of '98 Is About
In 1897 people from all over the country rush to the Klondike to find gold. The film follows a few of them out of that crowd and shows how the road itself is the test: the climb over the Chilkoot pass, avalanches, the cold, and the gambling and drink of the towns. As the search for gold goes on, the way people look at each other changes too. Four stuntmen drowned during the filming of the river sequences, and the film has been remembered for that as well. The director later called it the hardest film he ever made; the unit working in Alaska struggled with the cold and with heavy conditions. Dolores del Rio appears in Clarence Brown’s eighty seven minute silent film, completed in 1928.
