At eighty-two, on the fiftieth anniversary of the light bulb, Thomas Edison looks back. He starts from the day he arrived in New York at twenty-two: no money in his pocket, and in his hand an early device for sending stock prices. Then come the laboratory at Menlo Park, one failure after another, and at last a lamp that works. Clarence Brown's MGM film is the sequel to Young Tom Edison, made the same year, in which Mickey Rooney played Edison as a boy. Here it is Spencer Tracy. Tracy read Edison's notebooks and letters for the part. The film was nominated for an Oscar for original screenplay. The telling credits the invention not to a flash of genius but to a long stubbornness.
