What Angels in the Outfield Is About
Guffy McGovern, manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, is foul-mouthed, furious and impossible to get along with, and his team is the worst in the league. One day on the field a voice nobody else hears makes him an offer: if he mends his ways, the team will get some help. Guffy gives his word and results start arriving. But a little girl at an orphanage hears that voice too. Clarence Brown's film puts a sports picture and a fairy tale together and keeps the real subject not on the field but in the man's own temper. In American cinema of 1951, baseball sits at the centre of the story the country tells about itself, and the film gently makes fun of that faith as well. Paul Douglas plays the manager and Janet Leigh the reporter who goes after the story. Real baseball figures of the period appear on camera.
