What They Met in Bombay Is About
In Bombay under British rule, two thieves are after the same thing: a priceless diamond belonging to the ageing Duchess of Beltravers. Gerald passes himself off as a detective from Lloyd’s and Anya as an aristocrat, and neither knows what the other is as they both reach for the same necklace. Fleeing, Gerald ends up in China, where wearing a British officer’s uniform to keep up a bluff lands him inside an actual war and turns him, against his own intentions, into a hero. Clarence Brown directed the MGM production with Clark Gable and Rosalind Russell, and Peter Lorre in support. It was made in 1941, as the Japanese army was advancing in China.
