What The Vampire of Dusseldorf Is About
In Düsseldorf at the start of the thirties, women and young girls are being killed and the city lives in fear. Robert Hossein puts the killer’s real name, Peter Kürten, directly into the title, and presents him as a factory worker, through his involvement with a cabaret singer named Anna. The director came to the project after watching Fritz Lang’s M many times; Lang had used the case only partly as inspiration, while Hossein chose to look at the actual events more directly. Rather than going into the detail of the murders, the film shows a city inside an economic collapse, the unemployment and the readiness to lynch. A co-production of France, Spain and Italy, it opened in France on 7 April 1965. Hossein directed and took the lead role, and considered it the best of his own films.
