What Les Misérables Is About
Jean Valjean, sentenced to years at hard labour for stealing a loaf of bread, changes his identity after release and builds a new life, but the policeman Javert never lets him go. The pursuit consumes the lives of both men. One correction is needed: our record calls the background the French Revolution, when the barricades of the novel belong to the June Rebellion of 1832, forty years later. This adaptation by Robert Hossein runs over three and a half hours and tries to match the scale of the book. Lino Ventura plays Valjean.
