What The Wedding Party Is About
Dominique Deruddere’s 2005 German-Belgian production takes place at a country inn. Franz Berger is struggling to keep it open, and on this day Hermann Walzer has booked the dining room for his son’s wedding, which matters because the two men already loathe each other. When the first course turns out to be off, Hermann walks out with the entire wedding party and refuses to pay. Franz locks the doors, leaving the bride and Hermann’s wife inside and the crowd outside, and what follows is a siege conducted with shotguns, grenades and a shovel. The comedy turns into threat quickly, and the film keeps asking what it will take to stop two stubborn men. Armin Rohde and Uwe Ochsenknecht play them.
