What The Whale Is About
A young killer whale, an orca, loses contact with his family off the coast of British Columbia and turns up alone in a narrow arm of sea between mountains, a place called Nootka Sound. Named Luna, and without any social contact, he starts trying to make friends with people, which drops him into the middle of an argument between protection and contact. Suzanne Chisholm and Michael Parfit’s documentary uses the same footage as their 2007 film Saving Luna, rebuilt this time in the third person, with the directors’ own relationship with the animal pushed into the background. Ryan Reynolds narrates the new version.
