What The Wild Swans Is About
Adapted from the tale by Andersen, the animation is about a princess whose eleven brothers are turned into swans by a witch. The brothers can take human form only at night; when the sun comes up they are swans again. There is one way to break the spell: their sister must weave a shirt of nettles for each of them, and must not say a single word from beginning to end. She swears to keep silent and sets to work. Her silence leaves her unable to explain herself to anyone, and the real trial begins from there. The fifty seven minute Soviet animation by Mikhail Tsehanovski and Vera Tsehanovskaya was completed in 1962.
