What The Wild Swans Is About
A widowed king marries the daughter of an old sorceress he meets while hunting in the forest, and the new queen turns the six princes into swans. Seeing what has happened, their sister Eliza flees into the woods and sets about the one thing she learns will break the spell: she will weave a shirt for each of them out of nettles and will not speak a single word until she has finished. She keeps her silence when she meets the young king who falls in love with her, and again when the witch accuses her of sorcery and demands she be punished. The sixty two minute Japanese animation by Nobutaka Nishizawa and Yûji Endô was completed in 1977 and tells Andersen’s tale with all of its weight.
