What The Wild, Wild Rose Is About
The story is set in Hong Kong. There is a night club in the Wanchai district. A woman who sings on its stage works there. She does as she pleases and bows to nobody. A young man joins the club as a pianist. He had been living a quiet and orderly life. The woman takes an interest in him. The affair takes both of them to unexpected places. He loses his work, his circle and his order. She pays the price of her own choices. The story draws on Bizet’s opera Carmen. The songs are adapted from that opera as well. Grace Chang stands at the centre of the film. The production counts among the important works of the Cathay studio. Grace Chang and Chang Yang appear in the hundred and thirty four minute film, a Hong Kong production Wong Tin-Lam finished in 1960.
