What The Work and the Glory Is About

Benjamin and Mary Ann Steed leave their Vermont homestead in the 1820s for Palmyra in upstate New York, and only afterwards understand that the town they have joined is split along religious lines. The young man they hire to help on the farm turns out to be at the centre of the argument tearing the place apart: his name is Joseph Smith. As the pressure builds, each of the Steeds is forced to work out what they actually believe, and the household divides in ways the parents cannot referee. Russell Holt directs from the first volume of Gerald N. Lund’s nine-book series, Pillar of Light, in what became the first of three films drawn from it, made for seven and a half million dollars and recovering rather less than half of that at the box office.
