Those Who Remain

Bertrand goes to the hospital every day to see his wife, a long journey by train and bus, without ever missing one. Lorraine makes the same trip to visit her boyfriend, rather less willingly. They run into each other in the corridors, then have a coffee, then Lorraine offers to drive him to the station. Inside a life that is being spent in a waiting room, the two of them start holding on to each other. Anne Le Ny's first film is about the people who stay beside the illness: the companions who get tired, ashamed and sometimes angry, and cannot say so to anyone. The film neither judges them nor canonises them. Vincent Lindon and Emmanuelle Devos carry what is between them through looks and silences, without ever announcing it. The director herself appears in the film.
