What Tintin and I Is About
The documentary rests on a set of recordings made in 1971 and then locked in a safe for years: unusually candid interviews given by Hergé to the young Numa Sadoul. Anders Østergaard builds around those tapes, tracing both the social and political ground under Tintin’s world and the unease of the man who drew it. The film’s centre of gravity is the breakdown Hergé went through before making Tintin in Tibet, the album generally regarded as his most personal. What emerges is a portrait of someone who entertained millions of children partly because it was the only way he had of saying anything about himself.
