What Tito and the Birds Is About
Tito is ten, shy, and lives with his mother. A strange epidemic is spreading through the city: fear makes people ill, and the frightened shrink and harden into stone. Tito works out that the cure may be buried in the research his missing father was doing on bird song, and sets off with his friends to find it. The hunt for an antidote turns into a hunt for his father and for his own nerve. Gustavo Steinberg, Gabriel Bitar and André Catoto directed it together, animating oil paintings so that the colours and shapes buckle as the fear grows. It looks like a children's film, and underneath it is about how frightening a population makes it easier to govern.
